Metaplanet Raises $1.3 Million in First Sale of Bitcoin-Linked 'BitBonds'

Japanese Bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet has completed the first sale of its new “BitBonds” debt program. The company raised approximately 200 million yen ($1.3 million) through a private placement of unsecured senior bonds to select investors.

These bonds offer annual interest rates between 4% and 4.3% and mature in about three years. Because the debt is unsecured, investor returns depend on Metaplanet’s overall financial health, which is closely tied to the volatile price of Bitcoin held on its balance sheet.

Key facts

  • Metaplanet sold four series of privately placed bonds worth roughly 200 million yen ($1.3 million).
  • The bonds carry annual interest rates ranging from 4% to 4.3%.
  • Investors will receive their principal back after a maturity period of approximately three years.
  • The issuance was distributed by Metaplanet Securities under Japan’s small-number private placement rules.
  • Solicitation for the bonds began in late July, with the completion disclosed on August 13.
  • The bonds are unsecured and unrated, meaning they are not backed by specific collateral.

Why it matters

This launch establishes a new funding channel for Metaplanet alongside traditional equity financing. It allows the company to raise capital without selling more stock, while giving investors a way to gain indirect exposure to the firm’s Bitcoin-heavy strategy. However, because the bonds are unsecured, investors face risks linked to both the company’s creditworthiness and the fluctuating value of its Bitcoin holdings.
